ORANIA – A devastating road accident involving learner transport that was overloaded has claimed the life of one child and injured dozens more after a minibus collided with a truck on the route between Orania and Hopetown this morning.

The Northern Cape Department of Education has confirmed that the minibus, which was transporting pupils to Steynville Primary, Oranje Diamant Primary and Steynville High School, was involved in a fatal collision that has left the local community reeling.

Casuaties and medical response

The tragic incident resulted in one learner being fatally injured, whilst four others sustained minor injuries requiring immediate medical attention. Two additional learners have been transported to Douglas for comprehensive medical scans, and a further 28 pupils received treatment for shock following the traumatic event.

The South African Police Service has confirmed that the minibus driver has been arrested in connection with the accident. Investigators have established that the vehicle was overloaded at the time of the collision, and a case of culpable homicide is currently under investigation.

Department response and support measures

The Northern Cape Department of Education has mobilised a specialised task team to Hopetown to coordinate the response to this tragedy. Immediate psycho-social support services are being provided to affected families, learners, and school communities through the department’s Employee Support Services division.

The Department of Education is deeply saddened by this tragic accident. We are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the stringent implementation of road safety regulations.

Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Abraham Vosloo, alongside the Department of Education, has conveyed sincere condolences to the bereaved family. The MEC is scheduled to visit the affected families to provide personal support during this difficult period.

The department has assured the community that its District office will continue providing ongoing support to the affected schools and families as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy.
