Parys – Three suspects have been arrested and groceries worth approximately R2 million recovered during a joint highway patrol operation that intercepted a suspicious truck on the N1.

Members of Sasolburg Highway Patrol Relief D and Kroonstad Highway Patrol Relief C conducted the operation that exposed what appears to be a sophisticated theft operation involving trailer swapping.

Suspicious Activity Detected

On Thursday, 23 October, at approximately 22:30, Sasolburg highway patrol members spotted a truck parked beside the road with the driver connecting trailers in darkness.

Upon investigation, the driver could not produce an invoice for the load or documentation for the truck.

Owner Confirms Theft

When officers contacted the truck owner, he confirmed that whilst the load belonged to him, his truck was a Volvo, not the MAN vehicle found at the scene.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property. A load of mixed groceries valued at approximately R2 million was recovered.

Coordinated Response Yields Results

The team alerted Kroonstad Highway Patrol to be on the lookout for a Volvo truck head. Officers subsequently spotted the matching vehicle with two male occupants.

Two additional suspects, aged 33 and 39, were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property.

Court Appearances Pending

The trio will appear before Kroonstad and Parys Magistrates’ Courts shortly on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.

The successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated highway patrol efforts in combating commercial vehicle-related crime and protecting the interests of legitimate transport operators.
