BLOEMFONTEIN – The deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, is set to recognise outstanding South African women scientists and researchers making strides in the field. The trailblazers will be honoured in Bloemfontein over two days – on 21 and 22 August.

Gina will officially open the award ceremony while Dr Nomakwezi Mzilikazi, deputy vice-chancellor of Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships at the Rhodes University and inaugural South African Women in Science Award (SAWiSA) Doctoral Fellowship recipient, will deliver the keynote address. The events tie with the celebration of Women’s Month.

Outstanding women will receive coveted accolades of the South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA). This annual event celebrates women for their achievements and showcasing their ability in the field, as well as being role models who inspire the next generation. This year marks 20 years of recognising excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The ceremony highlights the department’s ongoing commitment to transformation, equity, and inclusion in the national system of innovation.

The theme for this year is “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science.” According to the department, the theme places emphasis on amplifying women’s voices in STEM, breaking stereotypes, creating inclusive spaces for innovation and leadership, and strengthening mentorship for career advancement.

The celebration the next day will be in the form of a live broadcast breakfast discussion in which Gina will participate alongside some of the award recipients. Recipients will share stories of their journey, achievements and inspire broader public engagement with science, technology, and innovation.
The event will culminate in the launch of a commemorative booklet titled SAWISA: Where Are They Now. It profiles 40 alums whose impact continues to inspire nationally and globally.
