Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie has congratulated Team Western Cape following their remarkable achievement as Overall National Champions of the 2025 National School Sport Championships, marking a historic triumph for the province’s young athletes.

The Western Cape secured this prestigious title through exceptional performances across all three iterations of the National Games, Autumn, Winter, and Summer competitions, demonstrating unparalleled consistency and excellence throughout the sporting calendar.

Competing against the nation’s finest young athletes from all nine provinces, Team Western Cape delivered consistent outstanding results. The province’s dominance began with record-breaking performances in athletics and swimming during the Autumn Games, establishing early momentum for their championship campaign.

The Winter Games showcased the team’s versatility as they claimed gold medals in both under-15 boys’ and girls’ rugby competitions, whilst also securing victory in mild intellectual disability netball. These triumphs highlighted the depth of talent across multiple sporting disciplines within the Western Cape’s school sport system.

The Summer Games concluded their remarkable year with strong showings across diverse sports including goalball, gymnastics, softball, and table tennis, cementing their position as the nation’s premier school sport province.

Minister Mackenzie praised the athletes’ dedication and consistency, emphasising the collaborative effort behind their success.

“This represents a massive achievement for our youth sportspeople and constitutes a proud moment for the Western Cape,” declared Mackenzie. “Our athletes have demonstrated heart, discipline, and consistency throughout 2025. They, alongside the parents, teachers, managers, and coaches who enabled this journey, should take immense pride in their accomplishments.”
