Lebogang Chaka and Karabo Masilo were found guilty on multiple charges and sentenced to Life Imprisonment.

HENNENMAN – Police in the Free State have welcomed the severe sentences handed down by the Henneman Regional Court to two members of the notorious “TDK” gang, following a vicious home invasion that resulted in murder, attempted rape, and robbery in November 2020.

The accused, Lebogang Chaka (25) and Karabo Masilo (24), were successfully traced and arrested by Sergeant Letlojane and the Organised Crime Team after committing a brutal attack at a house in Airforce location, Phomolong, Henneman.

It is alleged that on 27 November 2020, at approximately 03:15, two suspects identified as “TDK” gang members confronted 20-year-old victim Mpho Leepo at his residence and began stabbing him, accusing him of being responsible for the death of their friend.

Three victims brutally attacked

During the attack, one of the suspects attempted to rape Leepo’s sister. A neighbour, alerted by the commotion, came out to intervene but was severely assaulted by Chaka and Masilo. The suspects then fled the scene with Leepo’s trainers and his sister’s mobile phone.

Following a thorough investigation, the two suspects were arrested by the investigating team, leading to successful prosecution.

Heavy sentences imposed

Chaka and Masilo were found guilty on multiple charges and received the following sentences:

  • Life imprisonment for murder
  • Life imprisonment for rape
  • Fifteen years for robbery
  • Six years for attempted murder
  • Additional fifteen years for robbery

The sentences will run concurrently where applicable.

Free State Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Apaphia Modise commended the diligent work of Sergeant Letlojane and the Organised Crime Team, whose swift action ensured the apprehension of the violent perpetrators.

Sentencing sends a strong message

“This sentencing sends a strong message that violent gang-related crime will not be tolerated in the Free State province,” the commissioner stated.

The case demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated police work in dismantling criminal networks and bringing violent offenders to justice.
