Provincial police’s Serious and Violent Crime detectives are investigating a murder and three attempted murder cases following a fatal shooting in which a minibus taxi was apparently targeted in Macassar on Monday (9 February).

The incident occurred around 16:20 in Magdeline Gila Road, Macassar Village, claiming the life of a 36-year-old taxi driver.

The deceased, believed to be a Bellville operator, was reportedly dropping commuters off in the local community when the alleged attack took place.

According to provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg three other passengers are believed to have been wounded in the shooting, an adult woman and two adult men. “Macassar police responded to reports of a shooting and found the victims with gunshot wounds on arrival,” he said. “The 36-year-old victim was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel, while the other victims were transported to a medical facility.”

Unconfirmed reports suggest that unknown suspects, travelling in a vehicle behind the taxi, opened fire on the minibus before fleeing the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remains under investigation.

On Tuesday morning (10 February) Macassar police spokesperson Warrant Officer Desire Adendorf said the suspects remain at large.
