Everybody in town was holding thumbs for Jai-Lee Pillay to come home with a coveted gold medal after the National Kasha Championships in Durban.

Sadly, along with all other sporting events countrywide, the championship, which was to be held during the long weekend beginning 21 March, was cancelled due to the recent coronavirus outbreak.

Jai-Lee’s mum Valerie Pillay said he felt disappointed. “Jai-Lee had been training very hard every day for the championship, but he understands the situation, and that our health comes first, and also that we should be considerate towards others, and we have to stick to the rules and regulations laid out by the government.“

We have a well-equipped home gym where we can all exercise regularly. Jai-Lee keeps fit by exercising for an hour in the morning and another hour in the afternoon.”Pillay mentions the lockdown time is actually quite special family time, as she and her husband get to spend much more time with the children. They love playing games, Monopoly being a firm favourite, as well as Lego and building blocks. The Pillays have a big stoep where they also spend time painting, dancing and singing to Jai-Lee’s guitar playing. Schoolwork is not neglected either, with regular homework sent through by teachers, and lots of revision done as well.
