If you’re tired of load shedding and ready to protest, a group of Capetonians are waiting for you.

Diana Dalby from Bellville started the Rise and Shine South Africa group around two months ago when she reached breaking point.

“I am just a gatvol house wife that can no longer take this mess that was created by incompetence and corruption at Eskom.” The group, which already held their first protest in February, are now gearing up for a follow-up one in April and are looking for people to join them.

Dalby says there are more than 600 members in her group and they currently consist mainly of residents from across the northern suburbs.

“We are a group of ordinary Capetonians wanting to stand up and be counted in a country that has gone dark. If you are sick to your stomach of empty chitchat about change and you want to become part of the much needed change that our children and grandchildren deserve, then join us as we bring our voices to government.”

Their first protest was held on 11 February and saw the group hand over a memorandum to Nombongo Mongo from the National Assembly. The other memorandum was handed to Mbulelo Yedwa, general manager of the Coastal Cluster (Western and Eastern Cape), Eskom. Both accepted and signed for the memoranda. Since then, the group has gained more support and members are using the hashtags #RISEANDSHINESA and #GatvolCitizen on social media.

The next rally is scheduled for Saturday 1 April and will start in Goodwood, where a motorcycle group will escort the marchers (in their vehicles) to Parliament.
