In a quest to serve the 122 girls and boys it houses as best it can, the Herberg Children’s Home in Robertson is hosting its annual CA 2 CX MTB Tour.

The management of the orphanage requires the help of the community in raising funds to purchase winter clothes for the children.

The 695 km event, one of its annual and biggest fundraising efforts, will take place from 26 June to 5 July.

“Every year we have a new project we raise funds for with the tour’s income,” Petro Uren, spokesperson for the orphanage, points out. “This year the money raised will be used to buy winter clothing.”

He said the tour comprises six stages. Starting at Klein Joostenberg just outside Stellenbosch, stage 1 is from Klein Joostenberg to Worcester, stage 2 from Worcester to Montagu, stage 3 from Montagu to Ladismith), stage 4 from Ladismith to Calitzdorp, stage 5 from Caltizdorp to George, and stage 6 from George to Knysna.

Cyclists can also look forward to the Oyster Festival, which takes place in Knysna from 9 to 18 July.

So far the tour has received 40 entries, so there are only 10 spots lefts as no more than 50 entries are accepted.

Of past experiences of the CA 2 CX tour, Uren said: “The public has always been very supportive. Even during lockdown we just postponed the tour to a later stage, and it was still a huge success. We have participants from all over the country.

“All the tours were successful, and we are so thankful to the people and participants who really make an effort to raise funds.

“Most participants are people who have their own businesses, and who continue to support the Herberg Children’s Home.”

The entry fee is R14 000 for the event, which takes place over six days, corresponding with the six stages.

All the meals and accommodation are included in the entry fee (3-4 star accommodation in guest Houses). Participants gets sponsors to sponsor R1 or more per km that they ride for the Children’s Home. The average km per day is around 110.
