PRETORIA – The man alleged to be behind a shooting that killed 12 people at a tavern at Saulsville Hostel has made his first court appearance, as families of the victims continue to seek answers following the weekend attack.
The 32-year-old accused, who hails from Limpopo, appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court facing 12 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder linked to the incident.

According to the Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Pretoria, the shooting occurred at about 04:00 on 6 December at a tavern at Saulsville Hostel. It is alleged that the accused, together with two accomplices, opened fire on patrons, killing 12 people and injuring several others.

Following an intensive police investigation, the suspect was arrested on 22 December in Polokwane, Limpopo. At the time of his arrest, he was already in custody in connection with an unrelated matter.
Mahanjana said the accused was traced and arrested after thorough investigative work by police. “The matter has been postponed to allow for bail investigations, and further investigations are continuing,” she said.
The case was postponed to 31 December.
