GQEBERHA – A 42-year-old suspect has been arrested within minutes following a fatal shooting at a shopping centre in Walker Drive, Gqeberha, on Sunday morning, 8 February.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the suspect was apprehended within minutes after a swift response by community members and private security.
“A swift response by community members and private security led to the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect within minutes following a fatal shooting at a shopping centre in Walker Drive.”
She added that the incident occurred at approximately 10:35, when the suspect allegedly entered business premises at the shopping centre carrying a black backpack. Shortly thereafter, four gunshots were heard by people inside the centre.
“The suspect exited the shop still carrying the backpack and fled on foot,” Captain Janse van Rensburg said.
Community members and private security guards reportedly gave chase as the suspect ran towards the bushes along Walker Drive. SAPS was alerted and, with the assistance of the community and private security, the suspect was apprehended.
Upon arrival at the scene, SAPS Kabega Park members found a 36-year-old foreign national inside the shop with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that a firearm with ammunition, as well as the backpack allegedly carried by the suspect, were recovered. SAPS further stated that nothing was stolen during the incident.
“The motive for the attack is unknown and will form part of the ongoing investigation,” Captain Janse van Rensburg added.
The suspect is currently detained on a charge of murder and is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court during the week.
