GQEBERHA – Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the shooting of a police officer in Missionvale, Gqeberha.

The arrest comes after a manhunt was launched to find the shooter who opened fire on a police patrol vehicle, leaving a constable with multiple gunshot wounds on Sunday night.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the suspect was arrested yesterday.

“At about 11:30, members from Visible Policing at Algoa Park SAPS acted on information about the whereabouts of a person of interest believed to be involved in shooting a member on Sunday evening,” Nkohli said.

The suspect was traced and located in an open space near Nelson Mandela University’s Missionvale Campus, where he was arrested.

“A 30-year-old suspect is due to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 1 October, on charges ranging from attempted murder to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” Nkohli added.

The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with ammunition at the time of his arrest.

Meanwhile, the injured police officer remains hospitalised.
