SuperSport has launched an ambitious nationwide talent search aimed at discovering the country’s next generation of sports presenters and commentators, offering aspiring broadcasters a direct pathway into professional sports media.
The SuperSport MVP Talent Search, which kicked off on Friday, 1 August, represents the broadcaster’s most comprehensive recruitment drive to date, specifically targeting dynamic young talent to inject fresh voices and diverse perspectives into South African sports broadcasting.
Hopeful candidates can pursue their broadcasting dreams through two distinct entry routes, designed to accommodate different comfort levels and geographical locations.
The primary entry method involves online submissions through the dedicated website. Participants must complete a registration form before accessing a curated selection of iconic sporting moments for inspiration. The challenge requires creating a unique 45-second audition clip that showcases their commentary style, energy, and sports insights.
Online entries close on 1 September, giving candidates limited time to perfect their submissions.
For those preferring face-to-face auditions, SuperSport’s mobile studio will visit major university campuses across South Africa, offering live recording opportunities in a professional setting.
Campus audition tour dates
The confirmed campus visits include: Pretoria: TUKS University – 11 August – Port Elizabeth: Nelson Mandela University – 25 August – Cape Town: University of Cape Town – 28 August.
Additional venues will be announced on the SuperSport website as the search progresses.
Campus auditions follow a streamlined process where participants register via iPad, select their preferred sport from soccer, rugby, cricket, or netball, and deliver their 45-second audition based on a 15-30 second clip, with a maximum of two attempts.
What SuperSport seeks in future MVPs
According to the broadcaster, successful candidates must demonstrate exceptional communication skills, including active listening, fluid verbal expression, and strong conversation facilitation abilities.
Deep sports knowledge remains crucial, with requirements spanning real-time analysis capabilities, broad multi-sport general knowledge, and comprehensive familiarity with teams and players across various disciplines.
Beyond technical skills, SuperSport values on-air presence characterised by engaging personalities, professionalism, confidence, and the ability to research, multitask, and entertain simultaneously.
Additional essential qualities include punctuality, flexibility, genuine sports passion, natural charisma, crisis management skills, composure under pressure, and a commitment to continuous learning.
The talent search features dynamic hosts Hope Mbhele and Tshego Koke, supported by a core judging panel of industry veterans.
Award-winning sports broadcaster Motshidisi Mohono and seasoned sports anchor Neil Andrews anchor the permanent judging team, while a rotating lineup of guest judges includes Smash Africa, Ntombi Mzolo, Kat Sinivasin, and Nomuzi Mabena.
The road to SuperSport success
From thousands of expected applicants, a Top 20 Draft will emerge, with these elite candidates flown to Johannesburg for intensive challenges at SuperSport headquarters.
The selection process includes high-pressure, real-world presenting and commentary challenges conducted both in studio environments and field locations.
Successful candidates will advance to the SuperSport Draft Camp, featuring several weeks of rigorous media training and broadcast challenges, including hot debates, vox pop relays, post-match wrap-ups, and live Q&A sessions.
This intensive programme aims to develop on-camera confidence, deepen sports knowledge, sharpen quick thinking and improvisation skills, enhance interviewing capabilities, and cultivate engaging, relatable personalities with strong digital platform influence.
The ultimate prize
The journey culminates in selecting a 10-member SuperSport MVP Squad, from which only three exceptional presenters will be chosen as the 2025 SuperSport MVPs during a live finale.
These winners will become the fresh voices of a new generation, representing the SuperSport brand across Africa and internationally.
The SuperSport Talent Search show premieres on 6 October, broadcasting every Sunday at 21:00 SAST on SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv 209) and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).
