Tributes continue to pour in following the passing of Dr Reneè Thompson, a woman remembered for her commitment to gender equality, academia and community upliftment.
The family of Thompson announced her passing in a statement on Monday (22 December) released by family spokesperson Desmond Stevens, describing the loss as devastating.
Thompson, a sister, aunt and godmother, had recently achieved a lifelong goal by earning her PhD. Her passing came just one week after her graduation at Stellenbosch University.
She is known as a researcher with incredible experience as parliamentary and government spokesperson. Throughout her career Thompson (47) has also drafted political party statements for the National Assembly. She also holds experience in speech writing and media. Thompson is also the co-founder of the non-profit organisation Susters 4 Life, whose mission it is to empower women from rural areas in Worcester and Laingsburg among others.
According to the family, she leaves behind a lasting legacy across activism, business and academia. She was known as a committed gender activist who strongly believed in dignity and equality for all. Her family echoed her particular focus on advocating for rural women.
“While she was publicly recognized for her courage and conviction, her strength was rooted in a private tenderness and an enduring devotion to her family,” Stevens said.
Many people were left shocked when Thompson’s death was announced. The family expressed gratitude for the messages of support and solidarity received from the public during this difficult time.
They have respectfully requested privacy as they grieve and honour Thompson’s life and memory.
Further details regarding memorial arrangements have not yet been shared.
