Tristan Stubbs produced a captain’s knock for the ages as Sunrisers Eastern Cape claimed their third SA20 title in four editions with a dramatic six-wicket victory over Pretoria Capitals at Newlands on Sunday afternoon.
Chasing a modest 158, the Sunrisers appeared destined for defeat when they slumped to 48/4 in the ninth over, requiring nearly 15 runs per over from the final four overs. However, an unbeaten 114-run partnership between Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke, a record fifth-wicket stand for the franchise, turned the contest on its head in spectacular fashion.
Stubbs remained unbeaten on 63*(41), including two fours and four sixes, whilst Breetzke cast aside his recent struggles with a calculated 68*(49). The pair navigated mounting pressure with a blend of fortune and brilliance, ultimately sealing victory with four balls to spare when Stubbs dispatched consecutive sixes off the unfortunate Bryce Parsons to begin the final over.

Earlier, 22-year-old Dewald Brevis had justified his eye-watering R16.5 million price tag with a magnificent maiden SA20 century. Walking to the crease at one for two after just seven balls, Brevis orchestrated a masterclass in controlled aggression, reaching his hundred from a mere 53 deliveries with seven sixes and eight fours.
His innings of calm savagery accounted for nearly two-thirds of the Capitals’ total, as he selected his targets with maturity beyond his years. Left-arm spinner James Coles conceded 20 runs in his opening over, whilst Chris Green’s first delivery disappeared high over mid-wicket. A 96-run partnership with Parsons (30) steadied the ship before Brevis fell for 101, reverse-lapping Marco Jansen to Quinton de Kock three balls after reaching three figures.
The Sunrisers’ bowling attack had laid the foundation for victory, with Jansen’s superb 3-10 in four overs and Anrich Nortje’s economical 1-19 restricting the Capitals when it mattered most. The pair conceded just 29 runs in eight overs combined, whilst the Capitals plundered 129 from the remaining 12.
Stubbs’ match-winning 63 was particularly significant, representing his first T20 half-century in 51 innings since August 2024, perfectly timed ahead of his call-up to South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad. As three-time champions in four years, the Sunrisers’ dynasty may stand unchallenged for a generation.
