CAPE TOWN – A man involved in a head-on collision died en route to hospital in Mitchells Plain.
Constable Ndakhe Gwala of the Western Cape police’s media centre said the man, the driver of his car, died as he was being transported by ambulance in Strandfontein Road.
Thirteen others, including three children, were injured in the crash, between Baden Powell Drive and Spine Road, on the evening of Tuesday 27 January, Gwala said.
According to a post on Strandfontein Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC) Facebook page its lifeguards were first on the scene and the crash involved a silver Volkswagen Polo and white Toyota Avanza.

First responders
Lifeguards Lisa Adams and Sanele Mkhasibe were the first there and assisted the injured until emergency responders arrived.
Said the post: “Unable to reach emergency services Lisa contacted senior lifeguard Luqmaan Naidoo, who responded immediately and arrived with the rest of the Strandfontein SLC crew and Paul Newman of Disaster Management.”

SLC said the team treated the injured, “prioritising the most serious injuries first, while traffic was safely directed by a tow truck driver.” Injuries ranged from minor to suspected spinal injuries.
Gwala said the crash occured around 18:25.
“Strandfontein police registered a case of culpable homicide for further investigation.”
