They’ll wear the nation’s soul into battle. When the Springboks face the All Blacks in the four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, they won’t just carry the hopes of South Africa on their shoulders, they’ll carry the very words of the national anthem across their chests.

Nike and SA Rugby dropped the jersey unveiling on Wednesday, revealing a design created specifically for what promises to be the most anticipated rugby series in a generation. The Springboks will don this special kit for the first time when they lock horns with the All Blacks at 10bet Ellis Park on 22 August, marking the return of a four-Test series between these two titans after a 30-year wait.

And what a jersey it is.

The standout feature? A subtle, tone-on-tone graphic featuring the lyrics of South Africa’s national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, arranged in the shape of the South African flag. Look closely, and you’ll see the anthem’s words appearing in all five languages, Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans and English, representing the country’s diverse voices, histories and communities woven into the fabric itself.

This isn’t just sportswear. This is symbolism stitched into every fibre.

More than just kit

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer didn’t hold back in his assessment of what Nike has created.

“This truly is a Tour like no other and so is this jersey,” Oberholzer declared. “Nike have outdone themselves in developing a design that speaks directly and honestly to the motivation of the team and management, they play for the people of South Africa and wear their hearts on their sleeve; now they will wear the words of the anthem on their chests.”

That final line captures everything. The Springboks have always played with passion that transcends sport, representing a nation still writing its post-apartheid story. But now, they’ll literally wear that story every time they take the field against their greatest rivals.

It’s powerful symbolism that resonates far beyond the tryline.

Technology meets tradition

Beyond the emotional resonance, Nike hasn’t forgotten this is elite-level sportswear designed for the brutal demands of Test rugby. The jersey features Nike FIT ADV technology, with lightweight performance construction engineered around the modern game’s requirements.

Players need kit that breathes during the fury of breakdown battles, that doesn’t restrict movement when offloading in contact, that wicks away sweat during the relentless pace of contemporary Test matches. The FIT ADV technology delivers all that whilst maintaining durability against the punishment 80 minutes of international rugby dishes out.

It’s the perfect marriage, cutting-edge performance technology wrapped in a design that speaks to national identity and unity.

Exclusivity amplifies significance

Here’s what makes this jersey even more special: it will be worn only during the four Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Tests against New Zealand. Not in other internationals. Not in warm-up matches. Only against the All Blacks, only in this historic series.

That exclusivity transforms the jersey from standard kit into collector’s item and powerful symbol of what these four matches represent. Thirty years since the last four-Test series between these nations. Thirty years of waiting for rugby’s ultimate rivalry to be properly renewed across a full home-and-away series.

When Siya Kolisi leads the Springboks out at Ellis Park on 22 August, wearing the anthem across his chest, it will mark the beginning of something extraordinary.

For supporters wanting to own a piece of history, the jersey goes on sale Thursday, 6 August, through Nike stores and Nike.com, Springbok retail stores in Sandton, Menlyn Park and Canal Walk, plus selected sports retailers.

The greatest rivalry renewed

Thirty years is a long time to wait. An entire generation of rugby fans has grown up without experiencing a full four-Test series between these giants. They’ve seen one-off Tests, Rugby Championship encounters, and World Cup clashes. But the extended home-and-away series that defined this rivalry for decades? That’s been absent.

Until now.

The jersey represents more than just what players wear. It symbolises the significance of what’s about to unfold, rugby’s greatest rivalry properly renewed, with history, pride, and the soul of a nation hanging in the balance.

Nike and SA Rugby have created something special. Not just high-performance sportswear, though it’s certainly that. Not just attractive design, though the aesthetic delivers. They’ve created a jersey that tells a story, represents a nation, and will forever be associated with the historic moment when the Springboks and All Blacks finally renewed their greatest rivalry across four proper Tests.

Come 22 August at Ellis Park, the Springboks will wear their hearts on their sleeves and the anthem on their chests. And the All Blacks will know they’re facing more than just a rugby team, they’re facing a nation united.
