SAVE THE DATE – South Africans will have the opportunity to explore the country’s spectacular natural heritage for free during the 20th annual SA National Parks Week, running from 22-26 September and with selected parks extending the free access period through the weekend until 28 September.
The milestone celebration kicks off with a special event at the iconic Kruger National Park on 21 September marking two decades of making South Africa’s natural treasures accessible to all citizens.
Free entry to 21 National Parks
During the heritage week, visitors will enjoy complimentary access to most of the 21 national parks managed by SANParks. This includes world-renowned destinations like Table Mountain National Park, Kruger National Park, and the Drakensberg’s uKhahlamba region.
However, SANParks emphasises that while park entry is free, visitors will still need to pay for accommodation facilities and additional tourist activities such as guided tours and recreational programs.
Two decades of conservation ducation
Since its inception in 2006, National Parks Week has become a cornerstone event for conservation education and awareness. The initiative has consistently drawn thousands of day visitors to participating parks, creating opportunities for South Africans to connect with their natural heritage.
“This week serves as more than just free access to our parks,” explains the conservation approach behind the initiative. “It’s about cultivating pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage while demonstrating our inclusive approach to conservation.”
Building conservation partnerships
The annual event highlights SANParks’ collaborative conservation model, which brings together diverse stakeholders including local communities living near national parks, businesses, scientists, and tourists. This partnership approach supports sustainable development practices while preserving South Africa’s unique biodiversity.
The week-long celebration also showcases how conservation efforts contribute to both environmental protection and economic development in rural communities adjacent to national parks.
Planning your visit
With different parks observing varying dates within the National Parks Week period, visitors are encouraged to check specific opening times and dates for their preferred destinations.

A heritage worth celebrating
As South Africa prepares to celebrate Heritage Month in September, National Parks Week offers families and nature enthusiasts a unique opportunity to experience the country’s rich natural and cultural heritage firsthand – from the Big Five in Kruger to the fynbos of the Cape floral kingdom.
The initiative continues to prove that conservation and community access can work hand in hand, making South Africa’s natural treasures available to all citizens regardless of economic background.
