SHENZHEN, China – Leon Kluge has brought pride to South Africa by claiming the Grand Gold Award and Best on Show at the Shenzhen International Flower Show in China, Asia’s largest floral showcase.
The Western Cape-based garden designer’s “Living Contours” garden impressed judges with its fusion of African and Chinese architectural design and plants, earning praise for its strong structure, subtle storytelling, clarity, precision, emotion, and sustainable execution.
A family legacy in bloom
Kluge’s connection to South African flora runs deep. He grew up surrounded by botanical gardens, with his grandfather having curated both Betty’s Bay and Lowveld National Botanical Gardens, whilst his mother operates a wholesale nursery in Nelspruit.
The multi-award-winning designer has previously earned multiple gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, along with honours at the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Gardening World Cup in Nagasaki.

Global recognition
Kluge’s client list includes governments, Disney, and the United Nations. His work emphasises ecology and sustainability, specialising in vertical gardens and community projects that blend art with social purpose.

The designer credited his team for translating his vision from sketchbook to showpiece, describing the victory as humbling and representing national identity.
