Somerset West’s own Megan Streicher tees off in the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur this week

The eyes of the golfing world – and certainly those of the Helderberg community, near Cape Town, are fixed on Georgia this week as Somerset West’s own Megan Streicher tees off in the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA).

Streicher, a former standout at Somerset College and current senior at the University of North Carolina, is making her second appearance in the elite event. She joins a select field of 72 of the world’s top amateur golfers competing for one of the most coveted titles in the sport.

The tournament follows a unique and challenging format. The first 36 holes of stroke play are contested at the Champions Retreat Golf Club. Following a cut after the second round, only the top 30 players and ties will advance to the final round.

Regardless of the cut, all participants are granted a dream-come-true practice round on Friday at the legendary Augusta National Golf Club. For those who make the final 18 holes, Saturday offers the chance to compete for the title on the same hallowed fairways that host The Masters.

The stakes could not be higher. The winner receives invitations to the next five Augusta National Women’s Amateurs, along with spots in major championships including the US Women’s Open, the AIG Women’s Open, the Chevron Championship, and the Evian Championship.

Streicher enters the week in blistering form. Now ranked among the top 50 amateurs globally, her senior season with the UNC Tar Heels has been defined by consistency. Recent highlights include:

– A T-3 finish at the Dr Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii.

– A T-4 finish at the Chevron Collegiate in Texas.

– A strong T-7 finish at the Gators Invitational earlier this month.

Her journey from the greens of Swellendam and the fairways of the Boland to the international stage is a testament to a career built on steady progression.

Local fans will remember her historic 2019 victory at the SA High School Championship, where she became the first female winner of the individual title, as well as her 2021 South African Women’s Stroke Play triumph.
