GOLDEN GATE, FREE STATE – Visitors to the Free State can now experience the spectacular landscape of Golden Gate Highlands National Park from above, with the introduction of a seven-cable zipline adventure that adds a new dimension to the park’s outdoor tourism offering.

Launched by South African National Parks (SANParks) in August, the Golden Gate Zipline was developed in partnership with Golden Gate Zip Lines to provide visitors with an exhilarating way to explore the park’s distinctive sandstone cliffs, rolling hills and sweeping mountain vistas.

Situated near Clarens in the Eastern Free State, the park is renowned for its golden sandstone formations and the majestic Maluti Mountains. The zipline complements its existing attractions, which include hiking trails, scenic drives, horse riding and opportunities to explore the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

The adventure features seven cables and elevated platforms, with the longest stretch measuring 650 metres. Starting at an altitude of approximately 1 300 metres above sea level, the route ends at around 1 200 metres. The experience takes about an hour, offering participants panoramic views of the surrounding landscape as they glide between platforms.

Pricing and operations

It costs R650 per person and operates daily from 09:00 to 15:00. Bookings are not required, with visitors accommodated on a walk-in basis, subject to availability. The activity is weather-dependent.

“We don’t do bookings, only walk-ins, subject to availability, and the experience is weather-dependent,” says Dingane Ncala, manager of Golden Gate Zipline.

Participants are advised to confirm the age restrictions and other requirements before visiting. The operator lists a minimum age of eight and a maximum weight of 120 kilograms. Safety equipment and trained guides are provided, and all participants must attend a safety briefing and follow the guides’ instructions.

Comfortable clothing and closed shoes are recommended, along with sunscreen, drinking water and a light jacket.

Visitors can extend their stay by exploring the park’s scenic routes and walking trails or visiting the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre, which showcases the region’s prehistoric heritage. Accommodation is also available within the park.
