South African head coach Shukri Conrad has revealed starkly different strategies in his quest for global cricket glory, having guided the Proteas to World Test Championship triumph before embarking on an experimental journey towards T20 World Cup success.
Conrad implemented a clear stability-focused approach that culminated in South Africa’s memorable victory over Australia at Lord’s last year, their eighth consecutive Test win. However, he has deliberately shaken up his white-ball strategy as the team pursues a first major limited-overs trophy at the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
“One thing I did from a long way out was to bring some stability to the Test squad,” Conrad told AFP. In stark contrast, the T20 setup has seen thirty-one players feature across twenty-one matches since Conrad assumed white-ball responsibilities last May, with the side winning just eight whilst losing thirteen ahead of Monday’s tournament opener against Canada in Ahmedabad.

Conrad remains upbeat about breaking South Africa’s white-ball duck, particularly after the team registered their first T20 series victory under his tenure against the West Indies on Sunday. He insists the extensive rotation served a purpose.
“Yes, we used a lot of players – deliberately so,” he explained. “We always had to prioritise Test cricket, which meant managing the wellbeing of our players.”
This approach saw leading fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen feature in only seven T20 matches during that period. However, the highly competitive SA20 franchise competition enabled players to find form under pressure before the World Cup squad assembled.
Conrad recognises the fundamental differences between formats. Modern Test pitches suit South Africa’s formidable bowling attack, placing a premium on what he calls “character above cover drives” – batsmen willing to grind out scores. T20 cricket demands the opposite, with bat dominating ball and batsmen needing to clear boundaries, though Conrad maintains that “skillful bowlers remain skillful bowlers”.
South Africa endured an agonising defeat in last year’s T20 World Cup final, surrendering a winning position against India in Barbados. Conrad believes the core values and team spirit that secured the World Test Championship will permeate a squad featuring eight survivors from the Lord’s final.
“There is a belief that we can mix it with anyone,” he declared.
Captain Aiden Markram leads a batting line-up boasting a rejuvenated Quinton de Kock, exciting prospect Dewald Brevis and experienced David Miller, whilst Rabada, Jansen, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi provide wicket-taking prowess during the powerplay.
South Africa could potentially play five matches at Ahmedabad’s colossal stadium, including their opening three group fixtures. “It is an advantage to get used to certain grounds and it also means less travel,” Conrad noted, though he refuses to look beyond the immediate challenge. With testing encounters against Afghanistan and New Zealand looming, “the first priority is to make sure you get out of the round-robin phase”.
