The Sharks reaffirmed their remarkable mid-season resurgence with a commanding 36-24 victory over the Stormers at Kings Park on Saturday 31 January, marking the first time in years they have beaten their Cape rivals twice in the same season.

A bumper crowd of 25 364 witnessed the enthralling United Rugby Championship derby that showcased both brilliant individual skill and costly errors in humid Durban conditions.

The Stormers started explosively when Cobus Reinach capitalised on a quickly tapped penalty to score after just 23 seconds, setting the tone for a frenetic opening period.

However, the momentum shifted when Paul de Villiers was shown a yellow card for collapsing a maul, allowing Grant Williams to cross the line while the visitors defended with 14 men. The Sharks’ scrumhalf orchestrated much of his side’s attacking threat throughout the match, combining superbly with fly-half Jordan Hendrikse.

Ethan Hooker extended the hosts’ advantage with a converted try in the 25th minute, though the Stormers remained dangerous through the boot of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. The young captain landed two extraordinary penalties from distance, including one from inside his own half, to give the Stormers an unlikely 17-14 half-time lead.

De Villiers, who had been a nuisance for the Sharks at the breakdown, raced over shortly after the interval, extending the visitors’ advantage to 10 points and threatening to silence the home crowd.

The Sharks displayed remarkable composure under interim coach JP Pietersen, whose appointment has transformed the franchise’s fortunes after John Plumtree’s disappointing tenure ended eight weeks ago.

When lock Ruben van Heerden received a yellow card, the Durban side ruthlessly exploited their numerical advantage. Jaco Williams ghosted into space off his namesake’s pass to narrow the gap before captain Andre Esterhuizen powered over to restore the hosts’ lead to 28-24.

Hendrikse added three points from a contentious scrum penalty before the match reached its bizarre conclusion.

With eight minutes remaining, replacement fullback Warrick Gelant inexplicably dawdled while attempting to ground the ball behind his own line. The 20-year-old Williams demonstrated remarkable awareness and speed, diving desperately to touch down under Gelant’s nose for a converted try that sealed the victory.

The result confirms Pietersen’s extraordinary impact since taking charge, recording five victories in seven matches and securing both a Challenge Cup round-of-16 berth and a genuine shot at the URC play-offs.

The returning Springbok internationals have clearly responded to their new leader, with Esterhuizen’s captaincy proving inspirational and Aphelele Fassi dominating the aerial contests against fellow Springbok Damian Willemse.

For the Stormers, successive defeats have ended their eight-match winning streak, though Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s composed leadership and exceptional goal-kicking demonstrate why coach John Dobson entrusted him with the captaincy at just 23 years old.
