ODENDAALSRUS – The residents of Odendaalsrus continue to face severe and ongoing service delivery challenges, with the latest concern being the complete failure of the municipal telephone switchboard at the local offices of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
For an extended period, the municipal switchboard has been out of service, leaving residents without any telephonic means to report faults related to electricity, water, sanitation, or other essential services. Community members are now compelled to travel to the municipal offices in person to log complaints and seek assistance.
“However, upon arrival, residents are frequently met with closed offices and unattended service counters, often attributed to ongoing water and electricity disruptions affecting municipal facilities themselves. This has created a situation where residents are effectively denied access to basic administrative support,” says Cllr Estelle Dansey.
Dansey says in addition to the communication breakdown, numerous residents report that they have not received municipal accounts or billing statements for several months. Despite this, electricity and water disconnections are being implemented across parts of Matjhabeng due to alleged non-payment.




“Residents have expressed serious concern that they are unable to query, verify, or rectify their accounts, as there is no functional or reliable channel of communication with the municipality.”
During a recent imbizo convened by Thanduxolo Khaliph, exexutive mayor, assurances were given that the municipal telephone system would be restored as a matter of urgency.
“Regrettably, more than a week later, the switchboard remains non-operational. The continued absence of functional communication channels, combined with billing irregularities and recurring service interruptions, reflects a growing crisis that demands immediate intervention,” says Dansey
She says the leadership of Matjhabeng must urgently restore the municipal switchboard and ensure reliable communication channels, address the backlog in the distribution of municipal accounts and statements, implement a temporary alternative reporting mechanism while technical issues are being resolved and provide clear and transparent communication to residents regarding service restoration plans.
“Residents of Odendaalsrus deserve accessible, accountable, and efficient service delivery. Immediate corrective action is required to restore public confidence and ensure that basic services are delivered in a fair and responsible manner.”
