Somerset West police have opened an inquest docket after a body was found among dense vegetation in a wetland near the golf course and bird sanctuary on the border of Somerset West and Strand earlier today (Tuesday 3 March).

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Suzan Jantjies, officers were following up on information received in connection with a missing person report when they made the discovery. The body was found in the densely vegetated wetland area off Broadway Boulevard, near the intersection with Victoria Road.

When DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette accessed the scene via a pathway into the roadside area, the discovery was made in what appeared to be an overgrown ditch.

Although it is suspected that the victim may be a woman who reportedly went missing last month (February), Jantjies said: “The body is in a decomposed state and a post-mortem will determine the cause of death and gender of the deceased.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Somerset West Detective Branch on 021 850 1302.
