PARYS — A 57-year-old scrapyard owner has been arrested in Parys for possession of suspected stolen property following a comprehensive multi-agency operation.

Coordinated law enforcement response

The Parys SAPS, in collaboration with the Welkom Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Sasolburg K9 Unit, Provincial FLASH, Eskom, Telkom, Parys Municipality, and Fezile Dabi District DOCC members, conducted the successful joint operation.

Significant recovery

The operation, executed at a scrap metal yard in King Street, Parys, resulted in the seizure of copper cables valued at approximately R6,552. The cables, suspected to have been stolen from Telkom, Eskom, and the local municipality, were discovered stored in a room on the premises.

The recovery highlights the ongoing challenge of infrastructure theft affecting essential services across the region, with copper cables representing particularly valuable targets for criminal networks.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Parys Magistrate’s Court in due course on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
