Goolam Ahmed was on song for Jeppe as they remained undefeated in the Switch Schools SA20 finals.

Defence wins championships, and on a bowler-friendly opening day on 4 March, at the Switch Schools SA20 Volume 2 Finals, that mantra proved gospel as St Andrew’s Bloemfontein and Jeppe High School for Boys emerged as the only unbeaten sides heading into today’s action.

The University of Pretoria played host to a thrilling opening day of low-scoring contests where nerve trumped natural talent, and bowlers ruled the roost. Both Saints and Jeppe defended modest totals in nail-biting afternoon encounters that went down to the final over, setting the stage for what promises to be a pulsating knockout tournament.

And with matches resuming today, 5 March, at 09:30, broadcast live on SuperSport 216 and the SuperSport Schools app, the intensity is only going to ratchet up.

Saints escape with five-run victory

St Andrew’s Bloemfontein produced the defensive masterclass of the day, restricting Hilton College to 94/7 after posting a low 99/9 themselves.

It looked dire for Saints when Hilton’s new-ball pair of Sange Qangule (3/15) and Obakeng Motsepa (3/24) tore through the top order, leaving the Bloemfontein side reeling at 44/5 in the eighth over. Schalk van Rensburg’s 19 was the top score as Saints crawled to 99/9 from their 20 overs.

But what followed was a defensive clinic.

Nikhil Sukraj turned the screw with a superb spell of 3/27, claiming the prized wicket of Robert Burman (27) and applying relentless pressure. With Hilton needing 13 from the final over and Cameron Hargraves (23*) and Luke Wilson (17*) at the crease, Heindré Serfontein (0/20) was handed the ball for the closing act.

The result? Just eight runs conceded. Hilton fell agonisingly five runs short.

Saints had earlier navigated their opening fixture against Cricket South Africa’s Hub Invitational XI with two wickets to spare, courtesy of a magnificent all-round display from Serfontein. He claimed 2/6 with the ball before smashing 37 with the bat to guide his side home.

Jeppe hold their nerve against Affies

If Saints’ victory was tense, Jeppe’s three-run triumph over Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool was equally nerve-shredding.

Bowled out for just 108 in a reduced 19-over contest, Jeppe looked vulnerable after Affies’ Zian Labuschagne (3/15) and Nico Loggenberg (3/20) dismantled their batting lineup.

Enter Goolam Ahmed – the opening day’s standout bowler.

Jeppe held their nerve to beat Affies and remain undefeated on day one of the Switch Schools SA20 finals.

Ahmed ripped through Affies’ chase with a spell of 3/21, receiving excellent support from Zizi Mkhize (2/20). With Affies needing ten runs from the final six deliveries and Paul Bester (19*) still at the crease, Ahmed was entrusted with the final over.

He conceded just six runs. Jeppe survived by three runs.

Ahmed’s heroics weren’t confined to one match. Earlier in the day, he produced the remarkable figures of 3/7 as Jeppe strangled Graeme College to 49/7 in a rain-reduced 14-over contest. Daniel Keating (3/8) joined the party, leaving Graeme with no answers.

Ahmed’s combined match figures of 6/28 from two games make him the bowler of the opening day, a genuine matchwinner when the pressure is at its peak.

Jacobs shines in vain for Boishaai

Despite the bowler-dominated conditions, Paarl Boys’ High opening batter Abriam Jacobs stood tall with 79 runs across two matches, including the only half-century (56) of the day.

Yet Jacobs’ brilliance couldn’t save Boishaai from defeats against both Hilton College and CSA Hub Invitational XI.

Hilton’s victory over Boishaai showcased the talents of the impressive Obakeng Motsepa (2/19), a bowler with genuine pace and variation who looks destined for higher honours. Cameron Hargroves (42*) and Barack Munawa (25) also impressed with the bat in Hilton’s opening game.

Affies bounce back with statement win

While Affies’ loss to Jeppe stung, they responded emphatically with a crushing 69-run victory over Selborne College. Paul Bester (3/16) led the demolition, ably supported by captain Vihan Pretorius (2/11) and Nico Loggenberg (2/11) in a clinical bowling display.

Today’s fixtures: The battle continues

With day one in the books, attention turns to today’s matches, which kick off at 09:30 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport 216 and the SuperSport Schools app.

The headline fixture sees Affies take on Graeme College, a chance for Affies to build momentum after their mixed opening day, while Graeme will be desperate to bounce back from their 49/7 nightmare against Jeppe.

Meanwhile, unbeaten St Andrew’s Bloemfontein face a stern test against Paarl Boys’ High in what promises to be a fascinating contest. Can Saints continue their winning ways against a Boishaai side boasting the tournament’s leading run-scorer in Abriam Jacobs? Or will Jacobs finally get the team support he deserves?

The opening day proved that, defending 99 can be as thrilling as chasing 200. Quality bowling, disciplined fielding, and the ability to hold your nerve under extreme pressure are the currencies that matter most.

With Saints and Jeppe navigating the opening-day minefield unbeaten, both schools will fancy their chances of going all the way. But with conditions favouring the bowlers and margins razor-thin, every session matters.
