They arrived as learners. They left as leaders. Welgemoed Primary School’s annual Student Council Leadership Breakfast brought together young leaders from across the Western Cape for a morning that proved leadership isn’t about age, titles, or waiting for permission, it’s about action, character, and service starting right now.
Executive Mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis delivered the keynote address, challenging the room full of primary school pupils with a message that cut straight to the heart of authentic leadership.
“Leadership starts before the title,” Hill-Lewis told the captivated audience, encouraging learners to embrace leadership through their actions and character long before holding any formal position. The message resonated powerfully, you don’t need a badge or title to make a difference. You just need to start.
An interactive quiz brought the Mayor and learners together in enthusiastic participation, breaking down barriers between civic leadership and the next generation stepping up to lead.
Entertainment came courtesy of the talented Zip Zap Circus, whose high-energy performance added excitement and reminded everyone that leadership, like circus performance, requires courage, teamwork, and the willingness to take risks.
Six schools participated in the special morning: Welgemoed Primary as hosts, alongside Jan van Riebeeck Primary, Reddam Primary, Worcester-Noord Primary, Totius Primary, and The Valley Primary. Together, they represented the future of Western Cape leadership—diverse, ambitious, and ready to make their mark.
The breakfast achieved something remarkable: it showed primary school learners that they don’t have to wait until they’re adults to lead. Leadership begins now, in classrooms, on playgrounds, in communities. Every act of kindness, every moment of courage, every decision to serve others—that’s leadership.
Welgemoed Primary School is inspiring the next generation to look forward, dream big, and lead with purpose. And judging by Thursday’s breakfast, that future is in excellent hands.
