Blood may be thicker than water, but bragging rights at the Molnar dinner table belongs to Andras Molnar. Brothers Andras and Vlos Molnar masterminded opposing tactical battles in a pulsating encounter that saw Stellenberg claw back a 17-point deficit to defeat Diamantveld 31-20 on the final day of Absa Wildeklawer.

Diamonds refuse to be anyone’s warmup act

From the opening whistle, Diamantveld arrived with intent written across their jerseys. This wasn’t a team content to make up the numbers; these were warriors who’d already scalped Monnas earlier in the season and fancied another giant-killing performance.

The visitors struck first blood in the seventh minute through a moment of tactical brilliance. Finding space out wide, a perfectly weighted grubber kick sat up kindly for the chaser who was halted just short, but lightning-quick recycling saw Diamantveld cross for the opener. 7-0, and suddenly the Jade Brigade were on the back foot.

Stellenberg’s response was immediate and clinical. Working the ball wide, a perfectly timed draw-and-pass created the overlap needed to dot down and narrow the gap to 7-5. But Diamantveld weren’t intimidated. A monstrous shove at scrum time gave them the platform for their second try, pushing the advantage to 14-5.

The middle period turned into an arm wrestle of epic proportions. Stellenberg’s big forwards began making inroads, chewing up metres with brutal directness, only for Diamantveld to turn them over. A penalty allowed the visitors back into the Stellenberg 22, where they capitalised on a yellow card to camp on the line. Bodies flew into rucks with reckless abandon, both sides desperate to gain the upper hand, but neither willing to yield.

With seven minutes remaining in the half, Diamantveld opted for three points, extending their lead to 17-5 and leaving Stellenberg staring down the barrel. But the hosts weren’t done. Forcing their way into the Diamantveld 22, they threw everything at the line. The hosts held firm initially, producing a goal-line stand that would’ve made any defensive coach proud, holding Stellenberg up over the line.

From the resulting scrum, however, Ethan van Biljon produced a moment of individual brilliance, slicing through the Diamonds’ defence like a hot knife through butter. At 17-12, Stellenberg headed to the sheds with hope intact.

The Cape boys turn up the heat

The second stanza kicked off with the same ferocity, neither side prepared to concede an inch. Diamantveld, playing into the wind, showed tactical nous by taking three points when presented with a penalty opportunity. JG van Heerden made no mistake from the tee, stretching the lead to 20-12.

That penalty seemed to light a fire under Stellenberg. Launching a sustained assault on the Diamantveld line, they camped out in enemy territory and demanded points. From a close-range scrum, who else but Yanos Molnar picked and drove over. At 20-17, the comeback was well and truly on.

The big men from Stellenberg then went to work. Wave after wave crashed into the Diamantveld defensive line until finally, Janu van Deventer powered over. The conversion sailed through, and at 24-20, Stellenberg led for the first time. Had Diamantveld run out of gas?

Not quite. The visitors fronted up physically, sending their own big ball-carriers into the fray in search of a response, but Stellenberg’s defensive unit, well-drilled and organised, held firm. Van Biljon’s tactical kicking game came to the fore with a stunning 50-22 from turnover ball, gifting his side prime field position.

The final exchanges were frantic. Stellenberg attacked with venom but knocked on over the line in their desperation. Diamantveld, showing incredible heart, defended with the same intensity in the dying minutes they’d shown in the opening exchanges. But with two minutes remaining, Juvan Burden finally crashed over to extend the lead to 31-20 and seal the victory.

Time ran out on one final Diamantveld raid as Stellenberg held firm to claim a hard-fought victory.

Diamonds finish with pride intact

Captain MG van Greuning can hold his head high. The lock led from the front, doing all the dirty work at breakdown time and embodying the never-say-die spirit that made Diamantveld such worthy opponents. They may have lost the match, but they won the respect of everyone watching.
