Wesvalia vs Volkies, Zwartkop vs Montana in NWU Prestige Semis

Die Anker prepares to host a weekend of top-drawer schoolboy rugby as four sides battle for NWU prestige series glory. Wesvalia, Heidelberg Volkskool, Montana and Zwartkop have survived the carnage of the pool stages and quarter-finals, now only two matches stand between them and a shot at silverware.

Wesvalia face dangerous Volkies test

Wesvalia will lock horns with the ever-dangerous Heidelberg Volkies in a semi-final that promises intrigue. The Bruin Bere have yet to truly hit their straps in this tournament, with their most convincing display coming in a 36-9 hammering of Marais Viljoen during the pool stages.

Their quarter-final performance raised more questions than answers. A 29-17 victory over a gutsy Wagpos outfit felt underwhelming, Wesvalia were expected to win by a far greater margin. Key injuries heading into that encounter may have disrupted their rhythm, but excuses won’t matter come semi-final time.

Heidelberg Volkskool arrive with a strong side and their own improvement points to address. Their narrow victory over Pietersburg failed to showcase their full capabilities, though inclement weather conditions likely played a spoiling role in that contest.

The tactical blueprint for Wesvalia is clear: start explosively and maintain that momentum throughout the 70 minutes. Allow Volkies to settle into their patterns, and this tie could slip away.

Willem van der Sandt, Wesvalia’s director of rugby, knows his side must sharpen their clinical edge.

“Against Wagpos we spent a lot of time in their 22, but then we lose the ball and they release the pressure with a long kick,” said Van der Sandt.

Territory without reward has plagued the Bruin Bere. Converting pressure into points will define their semi-final fate.

Zwartkop favourites face Montana challenge

The second semi-final pits tournament favourites Zwartkop against Montana in what shapes as a classic David versus Goliath encounter, though Montana won’t appreciate that characterisation.

The men from Pretoria progressed to the semi-finals courtesy of a coin flip, lady luck smiling when they needed her most. Zwartkop, meanwhile, have been relentless since the tournament’s opening whistle, blasting all comers during the pool stages with ruthless efficiency. Their scoring margins have grown with each performance.

Montana understand the scale of their challenge. Shutting down Zwartkop’s pivot Tilon Baron looms as the key tactical objective. Allow Baron time and space to orchestrate, and Montana’s defensive structure will crumble.

AJ le Roux, Montana’s director of rugby, relishes the opportunity to test his charges against the tournament’s standout performers.

“We are excited for the match, it is going to be a good challenge. Their 10 kicks well and their two centres are wily. We want to test ourselves against the best and they are definitely one of the best teams in the NWU prestige series,” said Le Roux.

Montana will need to deliver the performance of their season. Zwartkop carry the weight of expectation, the burden of favouritism. Handling that pressure whilst executing their gameplan will determine whether they reach the final.

Four teams, two finals berths, one weekend of uncompromising schoolboy rugby.
