Nelspruit booked their place in the Virseker Noordvaal Plate division final with a gutsy 29-15 victory over Kemptonpark in a bruising semi-final encounter.

The Rhinos will now face Zwartkop on Saturday in what promises to be a cracking decider.

But first, they had to navigate the minefield that was a fully committed Kemptonpark outfit who threw everything at the hosts in a massively physical lowveld battle that could have swung either way.

Arm wrestle sets the tone

The opening 35 minutes was attritional stuff, with both packs going hammer and tongs in the collisions. Kemptonpark matched the hosts stride for stride, trailing by just two points at the break with Nelspruit holding a slender 12-10 advantage.

The pendulum appeared to swing decisively in the second stanza when the Rhinos upped the ante, extending their lead to 22-10 and seemingly taking control of proceedings.

But Kemptonpark weren’t done. The East Rand outfit mauled their way over the chalk to narrow the deficit to 22-15, suddenly breathing life back into their finals aspirations with time still on the clock.

Drama in the dying moments

With three minutes remaining, Kemptonpark looked certain to have barged over for another maul try that would have set up a grandstand finish. But the Nelspruit pack showed immense defensive resolve, holding up the drive.

What followed was a masterclass in game management from Nelspruit pivot Evan van der Merwe. With less than a minute on the clock and his side clinging to a seven-point buffer, the fly-half unleashed a monster 50-22 kick to relieve the pressure and pin Kemptonpark deep in their own territory.

Ill-discipline proves costly

Kemptonpark managed to steal the ensuing lineout, offering one final glimmer of hope. But a poor clearance kick gifted possession straight back to the Rhinos, who weren’t about to look this gift horse in the mouth.

Nelspruit went through the phases with clinical precision, keeping the ball tight and working their way into scoring range before crossing in the corner to seal the deal at 29-15.

Kemptonpark showed plenty of character and physical commitment throughout, but ultimately ill-discipline at critical junctures cost them dearly. You can’t afford to leak penalties in pressure moments against quality opposition, and the East Rand side paid the price.

Final beckons

Nelspruit now turn their attention to Zwartkop and what looms as a genuine arm-wrestle for silverware. Neutrals are in for an absolute treat on Saturday.

The Rhinos have shown they can dig deep when it matters. Now they need to do it one more time.
