Saturday at Maritzburg College isn’t just another fixture. It’s reunion day, when old boys return to campus, reminisce about glory days, and settle in to watch the next generation do battle. This year, they’re in for an absolute cracker.
Undefeated Hilton roll into town for a Midlands derby of epic proportions, bringing their perfect record and a reputation for closing out tight matches. For the gathered alumni swapping war stories, this is as big as schoolboy rugby gets.
Maritzburg College have been building serious momentum since their agonisingly narrow defeat to then number-one ranked Stellenberg at the Absa Wildeklawer tournament. They lost by just one try in a performance that announced their credentials to the nation.

Since Absa Wildeklawer, College have been on a tear. They’ve dispatched a strong Durban High School outfit, seen off St Charles, and put Northwood to the sword, the same Northwood side that had a blinder of a tournament at the Wildeklawer.
Against KZN opposition, Maritzburg’s record is near-spotless. Their only blemish? An opening-round defeat to Westville, who themselves drew with Kearsney and lost to Northwood. Context matters, and that early-season loss looks increasingly forgivable given College’s resurgence.
Hilton, meanwhile, remain the last unbeaten side standing. Apart from the absolute hammering they dealt Glenwood, they’ve been pushed hard by KZN opposition all season. A fixture against DHS was cancelled due to illness earlier in the campaign, denying us what would have been a fascinating clash.
But don’t mistake Hilton for a lucky side riding their fortune. They downed St Joseph’s Nudgee College, a side that had beaten Grey College. Hilton know how to win the tight ones, and that composure under pressure will be critical on Saturday.
“Hilton is a very good side and we respect that,” said Kelvin Elders, assistant coach at Maritzburg College. “Our approach is more about focusing on ourselves and getting our own process right. We are looking forward to welcoming our old boys back to the campus. I believe it is going to be a spectacle for all who come to watch.”
The battle within the battle will be fought at number eight, where two absolute workhorses collide. Rory Stanton anchors the Maritzburg pack, whilst Zander Muller does likewise for Hilton. Both are hard-carrying enforcers who set the tempo for their sides, and their head-to-head will go a long way towards determining which pack dominates the gainline.
When these two number eights meet in the collision zones, expect fireworks. Whoever wins that personal duel could swing the entire contest.
For the old boys gathered on the sidelines, Saturday promises to deliver everything they loved about their own playing days, fierce local rivalry, brutal physicality, and schoolboy rugby played at the highest level.
Hilton arrive with an unbeaten record and a point to prove. Maritzburg, buoyed by their recent form and roared on by a raucous home crowd plus returning alumni, will be desperate to hand the visitors their first defeat.
Reunion day at Maritzburg College is about to get very loud indeed.
