Leopards write fairytale as they conquer Afgri Week

The final day of the Afgri Provincial Week on 2 July delivered the sort of sporting theatre that schoolboy rugby was invented for, historic upsets, dramatic comebacks, and a smaller union punching well above its weight to claim an unforgettable triumph.

The Leopards U15 outfit defeated the Bulls 27-20 in an unofficial final that had everything, finishing as the only unbeaten side in the division.

Yes, Western Province wasn’t represented at the tournament, but that takes absolutely nothing away from what the Leopards achieved. They beat the Sharks on day one, dismantled the Valke on day two, and then survived a brutal arm-wrestle against a physical Bulls outfit that refused to die quietly.

A masterclass in grinding rugby

This was no exhibition match. The young men from the North West had to front up against a Bulls side built on power, physicality and relentless forward pressure. Forced to make tackle after tackle and feed off scraps, the Leopards delivered a genuine lesson in grinding, attritional rugby.

The Bulls flew out of the blocks, racing to a 10-0 lead that had the Leopards on the ropes. But this team doesn’t know when to quit. They clawed their way back with two tries of their own, and crucially, backline player of the tournament Jason Tarr slotted the conversion to hand the Leopards a 12-10 lead.

They struck again before halftime, taking a 17-10 buffer into the sheds. Job done? Not even close.

The Bulls fight back

The Bulls emerged from halftime with ferocious intent, sticking to their DNA of power running and mauling over to score. The blustery Bethlehem conditions made life hellish for kickers, but the Bulls nailed the conversion to level scores at 17-17.

They threw everything at the Leopards’ stubborn defence, eventually earning a penalty that they slotted to reclaim the lead 20-17. With minutes ticking away, the match looked destined to swing the Bulls’ way.

But champions find answers when it matters most.

Malambo’s magic seals historic win

Juandre Malambo launched a counter-attack reading the moment perfectly, he delivered an inch-perfect cross-kick to Angelo Pieters, who went in under the sticks to make it 27-20 with mere minutes remaining.

The Bulls weren’t done. They launched a desperate final assault, hammering at the Leopards’ try-line with time expired, only to knock the ball on metres from glory. The Leopards were awarded a scrum, but almost made a hash of it as the Bulls pack put them under immense pressure. Finally, mercifully, they kicked it out to claim the win and spark wild celebrations.

They’d defeated the Sharks on day one, the Valke on day two, and now the Bulls in the final, an unbeaten run that crowned them unofficial Afgri Provincial Week champions. For a smaller union, it’s genuinely historic. David slayed Goliath. And Bethlehem witnessed history.

Bulls U17 claim their crown

In the U17 division, the Bulls restored some pride by running rampant against the Sharks, claiming a 44-6 victory to be crowned champions in their age group.
