The stakes have never been higher. This Saturday, Hilton College transforms into the battleground where KwaZulu-Natal’s finest schoolboy rugby talent will lay it all on the line, with Sharks Craven Week selectors armed with clipboards and sharp eyes watching every ruck, maul and tackle.
It’s trials day for the Sharks Craven Week squad, and whilst provincial jerseys hang in the balance, these fixtures count for real. Pride, bragging rights and rankings points are all up for grabs as KZN’s rugby powerhouses converge on the iconic Hilton campus for a day that promises to deliver spectacular schoolboy rugby.
Picking a standout fixture from Saturday’s loaded schedule feels almost impossible, with several mouth-watering encounters guaranteed to test the mettle of these young gladiators.
Maritzburg College vs DHS
If you’re looking for the fixture carrying the most ranking implications and sheer significance, look no further than this heavyweight collision. DHS have hit a rocky patch, losing three consecutive matches, and for a squad with their quality and pedigree, that streak burns. They’ll be desperate to get back to winning ways and remind everyone why they’re considered one of KZN’s elite programmes.
Maritzburg College also tasted defeat twice at the Absa Wildeklawer festival, falling to Stellenberg and Outeniqua, but they can draw confidence from the fact both contests were tight affairs against top-tier opposition that could have swung either way. The lessons learned facing that calibre of team could prove invaluable against DHS.
“We are excited but it is going to be tough. We have some injuries but it just gives another player the chance to shine,” said Kelvin Elders, Maritzburg College’s 1st XV assistant coach.
That pragmatic approach from the College coaching staff could prove crucial. Injuries often test squad depth, but in a Craven Week trials environment, it also hands fringe players the opportunity to stake their claims for provincial selection.
With both teams nursing losing streaks and desperate for a statement performance, this fixture has all the ingredients for a ferocious encounter.
Clifton vs St Charles
Whilst this clash might not carry the same rankings weight as some of the other fixtures, expect nothing short of a bruising encounter. St Charles arrive desperate to arrest a worrying three-match losing streak, and there’s no better time to snap that run than against quality opposition with selectors in attendance. Clifton will fancy their chances of making it four defeats on the bounce for St Charles, but St Charles’ hunger for redemption could make this a cracker.
Kearsney vs Michaelhouse
Strap yourselves in for what promises to be an absolute show-stopper. Kearsney showed grit and tactical nous to grind out a draw against Westville in their last outing, whilst Michaelhouse came agonisingly close to ending Hilton’s undefeated run. Both coaches have earned reputations for identifying weaknesses and exploiting them ruthlessly, meaning this tactical chess match will be fascinating viewing.
“Kearsney is very well coached, they obviously like running with the ball, they have a good kicking game. They have some special threats, they will be well drilled so looking forward to the encounter, two teams that like to run the ball and give it a bit of air,” said Marco Engelbrecht, 1st XV coach of Michaelhouse.
The collisions will be ferocious, and the rugby intelligence on display should be first-class as both sides look to outwit each other whilst catching the selectors’ attention.
Westville vs Northwood
Westville need this win badly. Four matches without tasting victory has left their season teetering, and they’ll be acutely aware that time is running out to salvage their campaign. Standing in their way are Northwood, who pushed genuine powerhouses Paarl Boys’ High and Garsfontein to the brink in recent outings. The Durban North outfit will have a serious point to prove after Westville claimed the spoils in their earlier meeting this season. Expect Northwood to come out firing, determined to exact revenge and prove their near-misses against the big boys were no fluke. “It is going to be a tough one, we haven’t had an off wekend since 7 March, they have a good pack, they play the ball wide very well. They have quality players throughout. They are going to test us in the setpiece. There are lots of threats we need to keep in check,” said Zander Erasmus, 1st XV head coach of Westville.
Hilton vs Glenwood
The Grasshoppers face a monumental task. Glenwood’s struggles are well-documented, just two wins from nine matches tells its own story, and drawing Hilton, riding high on an unbeaten streak and brimming with confidence, feels like the rugby powers that be have dealt them a cruel hand. Hilton will be hungry to maintain their momentum and impress the watching selectors, making this a potential mismatch. Still, derby matches have a habit of producing surprises, and Glenwood will hope local pride can spark something special.
Saturday’s trials day represents more than just another round of fixtures. For the players, it’s an opportunity to wear provincial colours and represent the Sharks at Craven Week, South Africa’s premier schoolboy rugby showcase. For the schools, it’s about pride, rankings and momentum heading into the business end of the season.
The selectors will have their work cut out. With this much talent on display across multiple matches, choosing the final Sharks Craven Week squad will be no easy task. Rugby fans with nothing planned for Saturday would be wise to make their way to Hilton College for what promises to be a festival of schoolboy rugby at its finest.
