In one of the matches of the season, Garsfontein edged a pulsating encounter with Paarl Boys High 31-28, overturning a late deficit to claim a famous victory built on superb line speed and relentless breakdown pressure when it mattered most.

Boishaai made their intentions clear from the opening whistle, using their powerful forward pack to batter the Garsfontein line like a medieval siege engine. Wave after wave of blue-and-white jerseys crashed into the defensive wall, gaining precious metres with each brutal carry before eventually crossing for a 7-0 lead.

The opening quarter belonged entirely to Paarl Boys, who played all the rugby while Garsfontein’s defence held firm under immense pressure. But when the Garsie Bere finally got their hands on the ball, they showed they weren’t afraid to attack from anywhere on the park, a fearlessness that would prove crucial as the match unfolded.

Garsfontein’s patience paid dividends in the 20th minute. Their driving maul was stopped expertly by Paarl Boys, but instead of panicking, they kept the pressure on. Adding backline players for extra weight, they crashed over the line with Justin Blom dotting down to level things at 7-7. The message was clear: this Pretoria outfit wouldn’t be bullied.

Five minutes later, flanker Stefan van der Vyver showed what powerful running from the back row can achieve, getting over the line to give Garsfontein their first taste of the lead at 14-7. Suddenly, the momentum had shifted.

The try of the match came through Yuvrah George, who showed blistering speed and footwork to finish brilliantly after the play went wide. But credit must go to Levi Jordaan for an absolutely stunning pass under pressure that put George in space. At 21-7, the halftime scoreline looked commanding for Garsfontein.

Paarl Boys weren’t about to roll over. They struck back from a turnover, putting a delicate kick behind the Garsfontein line. Winger Aleit Stander won the foot race to the bouncing ball and touched down to make it 21-14. Game on.

A Garsies penalty extended the lead to 24-14, but Boishaai’s forward power was beginning to tell. After a barrage of brutal forward runs, with wave after wave knocking on the door, Ruben De Jager finally kicked it down to score and cut the deficit to 24-21. The momentum had shifted dramatically towards the men from Paarl.

Boishaai used their newfound ascendancy perfectly, their bruising forwards bashing the door down once more to take a 28-24 lead. With time running out, it looked like Paarl Boys had timed their surge to perfection.

But Garsfontein had one more trick up their sleeve. From a middle scrum with just eight minutes remaining, Drewyn Baron showed the defenders a clean pair of heels, racing away to restore the lead at 31-28.

When the final whistle sounded, Garsfontein had secured a famous victory that will live long in the memory. This was a match that had everything, power, pace, skill, drama, and lead changes that kept spectators on the edge of their seats throughout.
