The Pretoria side turned a tight half-time deficit into a commanding 49-24 victory, settling the score from last season’s final.
Garsfontein hosted Helpmekaar in a fixture laden with history and intent; redemption was on the cards for the visitors after falling short in the previous season’s final. Under the guidance of Tjaart van der Walt, the Johannesburg outfit arrived in Pretoria with a point to prove. For 35 minutes, they looked every bit the side capable of avenging that defeat. But Garsfontein made certain Helpmekaar felt every second of the second half in this Virseker Noordvaal Cup opener.
The opening stanza belonged to the visitors. Shaye Lourens orchestrated proceedings from the middle of the park, his vision and distribution keeping Garsies on the back foot. Xander van Niekerk and John van Druten added their names to the scoresheet, and at the break, Helpmekaar held a slender 14-13 advantage. Garsfontein, however, had shown glimpses of what was to come, with Drewyn Baron and a teammate crossing the whitewash twice to keep the hosts within touching distance.
The second half was a masterclass in forward dominance and clinical execution. Garsfontein’s pack asserted their authority early, driving a powerful scrum over the line to wrestle back the lead. Moments later, Xander van Niekerk’s dangerous tackle saw him dispatched to the sin bin, and the numerical advantage proved decisive.
With Helpmekaar down to 14 men, Garsfontein’s driving maul became an unstoppable force. The referee awarded a penalty try, and another yellow card followed for the visitors, leaving them scrambling to stem the tide at 25-14. The floodgates had opened.
Yuvrah George turned provider, finding space on the outside before delivering a sublime offload to Lourens de Jager, who dotted down to extend the lead to 32-14. Baron then grabbed his brace from a beautiful inside pass by Keagan Knighton, the kind of interplay that separates good sides from great ones. At 39-14, the contest was all but over.
George, who had been a menace all afternoon, finally got his deserved reward, slicing through Helpmekaar’s midfield defence with ease to make it 46-14. The Pretoria side had dismantled their opponents, turning a one-point deficit into a 32-point rout in the space of 35 brutal minutes.
To their credit, Helpmekaar refused to surrender. With their full complement restored, most notably Xander van Niekerk, they clawed back two late tries to make the scoreline marginally more respectable at 49-19 and then 49-24.
The final whistle confirmed what the second half had illustrated: Garsfontein had settled the score emphatically. Helpmekaar will rue their loss of composure after such a promising start, whilst the men from Pretoria will savour a statement victory that announced their credentials in no uncertain terms.
