From heroes to heartbreak in 70 brutal minutes. The Leopards watched their commanding 13-0 lead evaporate into thin air as Boland produced a stunning second-half masterclass to claim a 39-20 victory in the opening fixture of the opening match of the Craven Week 2026 on Monday.
What started as a Leopards showcase transformed into a Boland masterclass in clinical finishing and ruthless counter-attacking rugby. The North West side will be asking themselves how they let this one slip through their fingers after dominating the opening exchanges.
First Half: Leopards dictate terms
The Leopards came out firing on all cylinders in Gqeberha, asserting their authority early. The opening 10 minutes proved a brutal arm-wrestle, with neither side willing to concede an inch in a scoreless opening stanza that set the tone for what was to come.
Ayden Willemse broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, crossing the whitewash before the extras were added to put the Leopards 7-0 up. The fullback’s composure under pressure gave his side the platform they needed, and they capitalised immediately.
Five minutes later, the Leopards extended their advantage through the boot, slotting a penalty to make it 10-0. When they added another three-pointer in the 32nd minute, pushing the score to 13-0, Boland looked rattled and out of ideas.
But just when it seemed the Leopards would cruise into the sheds with a comfortable cushion, Boland struck back. An opportunistic interception in enemy territory saw them race 65 metres upfield to crash over for a momentum-shifting try. At 13-10, the half-time whistle blew with Boland having clawed their way back into the contest.
Second Half: Boland’s clinical comeback
The Boland coaching staff clearly delivered a stirring message at the interval because their charges emerged transformed. Within five minutes of the restart, they produced a coast-to-coast effort that left defenders grasping at shadows. Heavy forward carries then battered the Leopards’ defensive line into submission as Boland punched over to take their first lead of the match, 17-13.
The Leopards were reeling, and Boland sensed blood. In the 52nd minute, an inch-perfect cross-kick found the winger in acres of space, and the clinical finish extended the lead to 22-13. The Boland backline was purring.
Seven minutes later, they twisted the knife further. After stringing together phase after phase, probing for weaknesses, Boland eventually found space out wide and glided over in the corner. At 29-13, the game looked beyond the Leopards’ reach.
To their credit, the men from North West refused to throw in the towel. A barnstorming line break in the 67th minute saw them dot down under the posts, cutting the deficit to 29-20 and offering a glimmer of hope with three minutes remaining.
But that hope was extinguished just two minutes later when Boland slotted a penalty to make it 32-20, restoring breathing room. And in the dying moments, another Boland interception sealed the deal in emphatic fashion, the final whistle confirming a 39-20 victory for the Boland.
The turning point
The stroke-of-halftime interception try proved the pivotal moment. What could have been a 13-3 deficit became 13-10, and more importantly, it shifted the psychological momentum decisively in Boland’s favour. They carried that energy into the second half and never looked back.
For Boland, this victory represents the perfect start to their Craven Week campaign. Their ability to absorb early pressure and respond with clinical execution in the second half will give them enormous confidence heading into their remaining fixtures.
The Leopards, meanwhile, must regroup quickly. Dominating the first half only to capitulate after the break will sting, but the quality they showed early on proves they have the tools to compete at this level. They’ll need to find a way to maintain intensity for the full 70 minutes if they want to bounce back.
