The South African Police Service (SAPS) is continuing its extensive recruitment process to select 5 500 new police trainees, with thousands of young applicants currently undergoing psychometric and integrity assessments across all nine provinces.
The recruitment drive, which closed on 18 July, generated an unprecedented response from South Africans eager to join the police force. SAPS received over one million applications, marking a record number for the organisation and demonstrating significant public interest in law enforcement careers.
Of particular note is the high calibre of applicants, with 334 765 graduates holding qualifications in policing, law, forensic investigation, and other relevant fields of study among those who applied.
The comprehensive multi-phase selection process currently underway includes psychometric and integrity testing as the first step, followed by physical fitness evaluations, thorough vetting procedures, and medical examinations. This rigorous approach is designed to ensure that only the most suitable candidates are enlisted into the police service.
While all young people meeting basic requirements were invited to apply, SAPS has indicated that preference will be given to applicants holding tertiary qualifications at NQF Level 6 and higher, as well as those in possession of a valid driver’s licence.
The recruitment process is being conducted simultaneously across all nine provinces, demonstrating the national scope of the initiative to strengthen police capacity throughout South Africa.
SAPS officials have advised all applicants to remain patient during the selection process, assuring them that recruitment teams will communicate directly with suitable candidates as the evaluation progresses.
Training for successful candidates is expected to commence in 2026, though the exact start date is yet to be confirmed. This timeline allows for the thorough completion of all selection phases and proper preparation for the comprehensive training programme that new police recruits will undergo.
