SAA resumes direct flights between Cape Town and Mauritius

South African Airways launched its new direct service between Cape Town and Mauritius this week, marking another step in the airline’s recovery efforts following years of financial difficulties.

The inaugural flight departed Cape Town on Tuesday, 9 December, at full capacity, demonstrating strong market demand for the route. The service will operate three times weekly throughout the year, connecting the two popular Southern African destinations.

The 4 630km route represents SAA’s continued network expansion as the airline works to rebuild its operations and return to profitability. According to Chief Commercial Officer Tebogo Tsimane, the launch reflects the airline’s “confident growth trajectory” and commitment to becoming “Africa’s airline of choice.”

The route connects two economically important destinations. South Africa ranks as Mauritius’s second-largest source of foreign direct investment in Africa, while Cape Town serves as a key business gateway for continental expansion. Mauritius exports significant volumes of apparel and textiles to South Africa, making the countries important trading partners.

Tourism data supports the route’s commercial potential. Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander noted that the Cape Town-Mauritius market has recovered to 93% of pre-pandemic volumes between January and August 2025, with 2024 demand exceeding available seats by 16%.

South African Tourism’s Chief Quality Officer Bronwen Auret highlighted broader tourism growth, citing an 18% year-on-year increase in arrivals from January to October, including a 14% rise from Mauritius specifically.

The new service also provides cargo capacity, potentially strengthening economic ties between the Southern African Development Community region and the Indian Ocean rim.
