Rustenburg delivered a clinical masterclass at Noord Suid, dismantling Welkom Gim 47-8 in a performance that showcased their attacking prowess and defensive steel.
The Rusties were absolutely ruthless, turning the screw on a Welkom side that simply had no answers to the North Wst outfit’s relentless pressure and expansive game plan.
Rustenburg struck with an early try, but Welkom Gim showed some fight, responding with a well-executed drop goal to keep themselves in touching distance at 5-3. It was a fleeting moment of hope.
By the 15th minute, Rustenburg had crossed the whitewash again, stretching their advantage to 12-3 and signalling their intentions to put this match to bed early.
The visitors were desperately trying to plug the holes, but the floodgates were beginning to creak open.
The 20th minute brought a moment of pure rugby intelligence. Scrumhalf Shaylo Cox spotted space and took a quick tap penalty, immediately getting the big men rumbling forward. The phase play created momentum, and soon enough prop Xander Stickling crashed over the line with typical forward brutality. At 19-3, Rustenburg were in complete control.
Welkom Gim needed to stem the tide, but the damage was mounting. They managed to add five points before the break, but heading into the sheds trailing 19-8, the writing was already on the wall.
Rusties came out firing in the second half and produced a superb team try to extend their lead to 26-8, leaving Welkom chasing shadows.
To their credit, Welkom Gim managed to stem the tide momentarily, tightening their defensive structures and attempting to build some sustained phases. But penetrating Rustenburg’s defensive line proved impossible. Every time they threatened, the door slammed shut.
Defensive pressure became offensive opportunity for the Rusties. A turnover in their own territory saw outside centre Zak Swanepoel pounce on the loose ball and showcase blistering pace, racing clean through the Welkom defence to dot down. Suddenly it was 33-8, and the match was well beyond Welkom’s reach.
In the 69th minute, Rustenburg produced another moment of individual brilliance combined with slick support play. Dandrè Graham received the ball with purpose, bumping off several Welkom defenders like skittles before delivering a perfectly-timed pop pass to Pieta Niemandt, who barged over to make it 40-8.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 47-8 victory for Rustenburg.
Welkom Gim will head home knowing they were second-best in every department. Meanwhile, Rustenburg will take immense confidence from this demolition job, particularly the way they combined power up front with pace and precision out wide.
