February marks the 36th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic release from Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Facility) and his walk to freedom after 27 years of incarceration.

To commemorate the event, Top Events and the Drakenstein Correctional Services will host the 14th 27 for Freedom race on 7 February at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility between Paarl and Franschhoek on the R301.

For the serious runner, there is the scenic revised 27 km run/walk (symbolic of the number of years spent in jail by the former president), or the 10 km run/walk or the Freedom Route (5 km). The day promises to be a family fun day of sports, history and entertainment.

Live entertainment will include Loren Erasmus, Paxton and DJ Global.

You will walk/run along the same route that was taken by Madiba as he left prison, from the Madiba House, Long Walk to Freedom, to the Madiba Statue at the entrance of the Correctional Facility.

Novanews is offering five runners / walkers a free entry to the distance of their choice. To enter, email the name of the venue where the race is taking place and your contact number to newsdesk@novusmedia.co.za by 27 January. Entries must be done on-line and close at midnight on 28 January.
