The Safety and Security Committee for the RMB Ultra-Trail Cape Town has closed the race village to public access. Extreme wind conditions at Gardens Rugby Football Club forced the safety decision.
This comes one month after the last minute cancellation of the 32nd edition of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, also due to severe wind conditions.
The cancellation saw approximately 24 000 stranded at the starting point.
This week overnight gusts reached approximately 90 kilometres per hour in Cape Town, causing extensive damage to marquee structures. These structures typically serve as the vibrant heart of weekend festivities of the Ultra-Trail.
The Race Village usually provides a lively atmosphere for runners and supporters. However, safety concerns now take priority over public access.
Officials confirmed that all scheduled race starts will proceed as planned. The TM 35km, UTCT 100 Mile, and UT100km races start from Race Village. Organisers maintain the original race schedule despite the closure.
Aid stations along the race route remain open to supporters. Spectators can still access these points throughout the weekend.
All races will finish at the Race Village as originally planned. Runners will receive their finisher’s medals before leaving the venue immediately.

Race Director Stuart McConnachie emphasised safety as the top priority. “We respect the decision at this time,” McConnachie stated. Officials monitor conditions on the race route closely throughout the weekend.
The race organisation promises timely communication to athletes and supporters. Updates will follow as weather conditions evolve during the weekend.
The closure affects one of Cape Town’s premier trail running events. The RMB Ultra-Trail typically attracts hundreds of participants and supporters annually.
Wind damage assessments continue at the Gardens Rugby Football Club venue. Officials have not announced when the Race Village might reopen to public access.
