Sylvia Kirstein

A retired teacher, Sylvia Kirstein (70) from Melkbosstrand, was found murdered in the garage of her home in Drommedaris Street last Wednesday, prompting Melkbosstrand police to open an investigation into a case of murder and housebreaking.

Western Cape police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation. “It is still unclear what was taken from the house, and this is part of the ongoing investigation,” Twigg added. “The suspect or suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested.”

Kirstein and her husband were alone at the time of the incident – her husband was found unharmed. It is still unclear if the couple has any children. The police have not released any further details at this time.

Community Policing Forum appeals for restraint and cooperation

The Melkbosstrand Community Policing Forum (CPF) also issued a statement confirming that the details of the incident are still under investigation. The CPF appealed to the public to refrain from speculation.

“The police are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify those responsible,” the CPF said. “The safety and well-being of our residents remain our highest priority. We urge anyone with information or who may have noticed suspicious activity in the area to come forward.”

Tragic loss of a beloved educator

Sylvia Kirstein taught for many years at Van Riebeeckstrand Primary School (VRS) until her retirement in 2016. A tribute from the school describes her as a wise and compassionate teacher whose guidance left a lasting impact on her learners and community.

“Mrs Kirstein will always be remembered for her wisdom, the gentle yet powerful advice she gave, and the humanitarian way in which she touched the lives of those around her,” the tribute reads.

She had a deep love for gardening and took great care of the school’s garden, just as she patiently and lovingly cared for her learners. Kirstein is remembered as a remarkable teacher, a wonderful mentor, and a woman who lived with quiet dignity and purpose.

“Her legacy of kindness, dedication, and wisdom will remain deeply rooted in the heart of VRS. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may the Lord bring comfort and strength to her loved ones during this time of loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family,” the school said.
