Cape Town’s iconic Atlantis Dunes will once again become the battleground for one of the country’s most uncompromising running events as Red Bull Dune Dusters returns on Saturday 21 February.
Set against sweeping dunes just outside the city, the event challenges runners to go head-to-head with one another — and the sand itself. What appears to be a short-distance race quickly becomes a demanding test of physical strength, strategy and mental resilience.

The ultimate sand challenge
Red Bull Dune Dusters transforms the vast, shifting dunes into an endurance arena where every step matters. The course combines flat stretches, technical sections and steep dune climbs, with unstable sand forcing runners to constantly adjust their rhythm, balance and power.
This is not a race defined by speed alone. Success depends on adaptability, smart pacing and the ability to stay composed under pressure, as deep sand punishes poor form and rewards control and grit.
A race designed to break comfort zones
The event features a 5km loop course run entirely on natural sand dunes and unfolds through a multi-stage elimination format, ensuring only the strongest athletes progress.
From the opening heats to the final showdown, runners must recover quickly, manage fatigue and stay mentally sharp while navigating ever-changing terrain. Each round raises the intensity, stripping away comfort and exposing true endurance.

A runner’s test of strength and mindset
Ultra-trail runner and Red Bull athlete Ryan Sandes believes the event holds a special place in the running community.
“After the 2020 event, the question I heard most from runners was, ‘When is Dune Dusters coming back?’ It’s such a unique challenge because it brings together road, trail and gravel runners and asks them to step outside their comfort zones,” said Sandes.
“Running on the Atlantis Dunes, with Table Mountain as the backdrop, is incredible — but it’s tough. Sand running demands strength, patience and mental grit. My advice is simple: start training early, get used to running on sand, build leg strength and practise as much as you can. What you put in is what you get out.”
Red Bull Dune Dusters is a call to runners searching for more than a standard race — a stripped-back challenge that asks one simple question: Do you have what it takes?
