The 2026 Comrades Marathon made history on Monday, with all 19,400 entries selling out within just ten hours of registration opening – marking the fastest sellout in the event’s history.
What began as a typical entry morning quickly transformed into an unprecedented rush of athletic ambition. After Green Number Club and Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) members secured their initial 2,600+ spots, the remaining entries were completely snapped up before the day ended.
The CMA announced the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the ultra-marathon had reached capacity in record time.
This extraordinary demand surpasses all previous entry periods, further cementing the Comrades Marathon’s status as one of the world’s most sought-after running events.
For hopeful participants who missed out, the only remaining pathway to entry is through the substitution system – accepting spots relinquished by other registered runners.
In a move to protect runners’ investments, the CMA has guaranteed full entry fee refunds if the marathon faces cancellation due to severe or adverse weather conditions.
Through a partnership with insurance underwriters iTOO Special Risks, the organisation has secured comprehensive Event Cancellation Coverage. This policy protects both participants and organisers against potential losses from unforeseen circumstances.
“The CMA believes that no athlete should lose their entry fee or miss out on the chance to fulfil their dream of running the Comrades Marathon due to conditions beyond their control,” organisers stated on their website.
As one of South Africa’s premier sporting events, the Comrades Marathon requires extensive planning, logistics, and coordination spanning months of preparation. However, the CMA recognises that extreme weather and other uncontrollable factors can sometimes force event cancellation.
By incorporating comprehensive insurance coverage into their planning, organisers ensure greater resilience and fairness for all stakeholders.
“This policy provides security and peace of mind for runners and organisers alike,” the CMA explained.
The record-breaking sellout demonstrates the lasting appeal of the grueling 90-kilometer journey between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Despite the significant physical and mental challenges the ultra-marathon presents, demand continues reaching new heights year after year.
“Thank you to every single runner for making history today!” organisers celebrated on Monday evening.
For runners still seeking entry opportunities, the CMA advises monitoring official channels for any additional spots that may become available through the substitution system.
