CAPE TOWN – Internationally acclaimed DJ Ready D, whose real name is Deon Daniels, has withdrawn his candidacy for the mayoral position in the City of Cape Town, mere weeks after announcing it.
TygerBurger reported recently that Daniels is a candidate for the People’s Movement for Change (PMC).
Respect the decision
PMC president Marius Fransman announced on Friday that Daniels will no longer be their mayoral candidate. “PMC respects Deon ‘Ready D’ Daniels’ decision to withdraw from his mayoral candidacy. Deon Daniels has informed me that he has existing contractual and professional commitments to clients and partners within his creative and entertainment career, many of which extend to the middle of 2027. This unfortunately does not allow him to continue in a party political structure. His decision allows him to give those commitments the attention they require, and we respect his responsibility to honour them,” says Fransman.
Fransman says they thank Daniels for his contribution to PMC and wish him well as he continues his work in music, culture, youth development and community engagement. “We respect Daniels’ decision and understand the professional responsibilities that have influenced it. We will not turn this into a political dispute. We wish him well and thank him for the contribution he has made.
Beyond political boundries
“We are moving beyond party political boundaries. People can serve society in many different ways. PMC remains focused on the work ahead. Our commitment to family, community and opportunity remains unchanged. We are reimagining society and putting people before politics,” says Fransman.
At this stage it is not clear who will replace Daniels.
Fransman announced the appointment of Maurice Page (an actor best known for his role as Tyron Daniels in the soap opera Suidooster) as Head of Creative Arts and Culture. “Page will strengthen our engagement with the creative sector and ensure that this important area of our work continues,” he says.
