Five suspects including two Mexican nationals have been arrested after authorities discovered a massive clandestine drug laboratory on a farm in Musina, marking the third such facility to be shut down in Limpopo province and reinforcing concerns that South Africa has become a major hub for international drug syndicates.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), working with the South African Police Service, South African Narcotics Bureau, Crime Intelligence, Special Task Force, Drug Enforcement Agency and Homeland Security, raided the farm in Vhembe District during the late hours of Thursday, 20 August.

Officers seized drugs and laboratory equipment with an estimated street value of R600 million, along with an undisclosed amount of cash. The five suspects, aged between 20 and 47, include two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and one Malawian national.

Pattern of industrial-scale operations across provinces

The Musina discovery follows a two-month investigation and represents the latest in a series of major drug manufacturing facilities uncovered across South Africa over the past two years, frequently involving Mexican nationals with suspected links to international cartels.

The most recent major bust before Musina occurred in May, when authorities dismantled a R1 billion clandestine laboratory on a 200-hectare game farm in Swartruggens, North West province. That operation resulted in the seizure of 481 kg of methamphetamine along with chemicals and firearms. Eleven suspects were arrested, including five Mexican nationals, as well as South African, Zimbabwean and Mozambican nationals.

The case later expanded to include the property owners, bringing the total accused to 13, with nine of them in South Africa illegally.

Earlier operations include a September 2025 raid on a crystal methamphetamine laboratory worth more than R322 million on a farm in Volksrust, Mpumalanga, where five people from a North American country were arrested. In July 2024, authorities dismantled a methamphetamine laboratory worth approximately R2 billion on a farm in Groblersdal, Limpopo, arresting four people including two Mexican nationals.

During the 2025 financial year alone, the Hawks dismantled 19 clandestine drug laboratories and arrested 45 suspects, including 18 foreign nationals.

South Africa emerges as synthetic drug capital of Africa

The escalation in drug manufacturing has led to South Africa being designated the synthetic drug capital of Africa by the 2025 Enact Africa Organised Crime Index, which assigned the country a score of nine out of 10 for the synthetic drug trade, surpassing Nigeria and Egypt.

The country’s role has shifted from primarily serving as a transit point for narcotics to becoming a significant location for large-scale synthetic drug production, with investigations probing links to Mexican drug cartels including the Sinaloa Cartel and Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación.

Major drug hauls intercepted at ports and borders

Beyond manufacturing facilities, South African authorities have intercepted massive drug shipments at ports and borders in recent months. In May, the Border Management Authority seized approximately 713kg of methaqualone worth nearly R1 billion at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

In June, Hawks and customs officials recovered approximately 90kg of suspected cocaine worth R36 million at Durban Harbour, concealed inside excavators shipped from Brazil. The following month, authorities seized 95 kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of R28 million at OR Tambo International Airport on a flight from São Paulo.

Law enforcement vows continued crackdown

Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General Adv. Gopz Govender, said the Musina operation sends a clear warning to organised criminal networks.

“We have struck at the machinery behind the drug trade. This R600 million seizure is not merely a quantity of drugs taken off the streets; it represents the disruption of an entire criminal enterprise. We will follow the money, the networks and every person connected to this operation. There will be nowhere to hide,” Govender said.

Provincial Commissioner of SAPS Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, said the operation demonstrates law enforcement’s resolve to protect communities from illicit drugs.

“We will not allow our communities to become markets for criminal syndicates. Those who manufacture and distribute these dangerous substances must know that law enforcement is closing in on them. This operation demonstrates that we will act decisively against the drug trade,” Scheepers said.

The five Musina suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August, facing charges relating to the manufacture and possession of illicit drugs. Additional charges may be added as the investigation progresses.
