KIMBERLEY – Two Zimbabwean nationals are facing serious drug charges after police discovered a massive stash of illegal prescription medications worth thousands of rands during a raid in Galeshewe last week.

Takunda Maturure (35) and Lynia Mapepeta (31), appeared in the Galeshewe Magistrates’ Court on Monday following their arrest in what authorities describe as a significant blow to illegal pharmaceutical trafficking in the Northern Cape.

The bust took place last Friday when police, acting on an anonymous tip from a concerned community member, raided a residential property suspected of being used as a base for illegal drug sales.

During the search, officers uncovered a sophisticated operation involving hundreds of bottles of prescription medications. The haul included 114 bottles of Painagon Syrup, 100 bottles each of Bronchleer and Stilpain syrups, 30 bottles of Lenazine Forte, and containers holding 431 tablets.

Perhaps most telling was the discovery of R156 921 in cash – suggesting a thriving illegal business – along with three cellphones believed to have been used to coordinate sales.

The pair face charges under the Medicines and Related Substances Act and the Pharmacy Amendment Act for the alleged illegal possession and sale of scheduled medicines.

Their case has been postponed until 21 October for further investigation.

“The National Prosecuting Authority strongly condemns the illegal trade and distribution of scheduled medicines,” said Mojalefa Senokoatsane, NPA Regional spokesperson for the Northern Cape Division. He said the NPA is commitment to working with law enforcement to ensure that violators “face the full might of the justice system.”

The bust highlights growing concerns about the illegal trade in prescription medications, which can pose serious health risks to users who obtain drugs without proper medical supervision or quality controls.

Both accused remain in custody as investigations continue into what authorities suspect may be part of a larger illegal pharmaceutical distribution network operating in the region.

In the aftermath of this weeks Limpopo bus tragedy in which 43 people died, police are now among others, investigating a large consignment of medicines which was found amongst the debris of the crash. The bus was on its way to Zimbabwe.
