Police seek leads after body of missing four-year-old boy is found in cemetery


FREE STATE – Police in Winburg have launched an investigation into the discovery of the body of a four-year-old boy at a cemetery near the Phahameng township in Valkop on Friday 21 August.

According to police, members of the community discovered the lifeless body of Rethabile Lefa Jafta at the cemetery and alerted authorities at 09:37.

Police officers who responded to the scene found the child with multiple injuries to his head and body. A black T-shirt was also found lying next to him.

Jafta was declared dead at the scene and was positively identified by his next of kin.

Search ensued

The boy had been reported missing the previous day (Thursday 20 August), prompting a search to establish his whereabouts and determine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Police said the motive for the alleged murder remains unknown at this stage. Investigations are continuing and no arrests have been made.

Free State police have issued an appeal to anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation or lead to the arrest of those responsible to come forward.

Those with information are urged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Liezel van der Westhuizen, of the Winburg police detective branch on 082 466 7678. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS App.
