LADY GREY – Stolen livestock was successfully recovered in Lady Grey during a collaborative search operation between local police and community members, highlighting the effectiveness of community-police partnerships in combating stock theft.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Ursula Roelofse, the recovery took place after the police received a report on Thursday, 27 November 2025 at 11:00 from a local farmer regarding missing stock: 80 sheep, believed to have been taken during the night from the grazing camp after the fence was cut.
Acting swiftly on a rainy day, Roelofse added that SAPS members from Lady Grey, together with members from the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, were joined by members from the Communal Farmers, Farmers Association, Gijima and Peace Committees who embarked on a search operation. “All possible leads were followed and led them to the mountainous area where the livestock was found. At this stage, 63 sheep were recovered.

“The recovered stock has since been positively identified and returned to its rightful owner. The case is still under investigation,” she said.
The Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem praised the partnership and said, “Community involvement remains a vital component in addressing stock theft and other rural crimes. We extend our gratitude to the residents who assisted in this operation. Their vigilance and cooperation made this success possible.”
SAPS encourages community members to continue reporting suspicious activities and working hand-in-hand with law enforcement to ensure safer communities.
